Healthcare catering challenge solved by Telstra Business Finalist
Textured Concept Foods have been recognised as Victorian Finalists at the Telstra Small Business Awards 2017.
TCF have helped hospitals and aged care homes across Australia dramatically improve the dining experience of people on texture modified diets.
Celebrating the Telstra Business Awards, Textured Concept Foods was noted for its innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and community-mindedness.
Typically, people with swallowing difficulties have had to endure bowls of unrecognizable mush for their every daily meal. TCF produce pureed items which are reshaped to resemble the actual foods that they are. This ensures every meal is a recognisable, dignified offering; which positively impacts patients’ interest in mealtime, the quantity they eat, and ultimately their overall health.
Provision of puree and mince moist meals has been a longstanding bugbear for the Healthcare industry. Up to 60% of aged care residents, as well as accident victims, patients with throat and mouth cancers, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and other conditions require meals of an altered texture. Inhouse production of these meals is often plagued by issues of incorrect consistency, dilution of recipes and nutritional content, and patients’ inability to identify what is served. Successful production of these meals typically requires special equipment, dedicated time and significant expertise; all additional pressures in busy healthcare kitchens.
Since its inception four years ago, Textured Concept Foods has succeeded in developing a commercial viable solution to this longstanding problem. TCF’s pre-prepared, shaped, texture modified food items mean kitchens can simply “plate, thaw, heat and serve” ensuring an appropriate, attractive, nutritious meal can be provided to those who need it. It’s a fairly simple solution, but its taken significant ingenuity to make it possible.
Its Textured Concept Foods’ hope that unsightly, unappetizing texture modified meals should soon be relegated to healthcare catering history.
Named One of Australia’s Top 50 Food Innovators!
Textured Concept Foods is delighted to be featured in new book, “Celebrating Australian Food and Agribusiness Innovations” released by Food Innovations Australia. Fifty diverse innovations from Australia’s food and agribusiness industry are featured. The innovations hail from micro businesses to multinationals and span the entire food and agribusiness value chain.
“Providing attractive, nutritious, cost effective meals for those on puree diets has been a long-standing healthcare catering challenge. To be acknowledged for our achievement in doing just that, to ensure all can truly dine with dignity, is a true honour ” says Darren Benfell, Textured Concept Foods’s Managing Director.
TCF’s remoulding of foods means people with dysphagia can enjoy attractive meals that look like a typical meal, prompt memories, stimulate appetite and return dignity to dinner time.
Historically the presentation of pureed food is as unrecognisable mush which negatively effects appetite and interest in food and often results in further dietary and other healthcare problems.
It was over 20 years ago that the first international research was released detailing the significant benefits of serving formed pureed foods, however a viable commercial solution has remained elusive until now. Textured Concept Foods is delighted to provide a solution that ensures all can nutritionally dine with dignity.
